Photographic Style
I prefer to use natural light, reflectors and candles as much as possible. I am not against using flash guns and studio lighting but natural light produces a more intimate and flattering light for a model.
Of course, flash guns and studio lighting have their uses. For example head shots, fashion and glamour. I tailor the lighting to suit the situation.
I like to shoot B&W whenever the situation allows. I recently started shooting film again, which has been fun and challenging. It’s interesting how ‘lazy’ I’ve become from using digital cameras where you see instant results with no jeopardy.
Motivation
When it comes to collaborating the things that motivate me are the idea and people involved.
To achieve a goal you have to be serious and focussed but that doesn’t mean the creative process can’t be fun at the same time.
If the process isn’t enjoyable, what’s the point?
Me, Myself & I
TLDR
I’m an English photographer from London. I studied photography at the London School of Photography where I specialised in environmental portraiture. I have had photographs published in magazines a number of times and also self-published 3 books.
Background
I was born in the south London close to London Bridge. I lived there for 30 years when I decided that I needed a new adventure and moved to Stockholm, Sweden.
After 10 years of living in Sweden’s capital city my ‘day job’ in IT moved to Skåne. After thinking things through, I reluctantly decided it was best to move with my job than to become unemployed.
My ambition has only ever to be a part-time photographer. I do photography for enjoyment, not for money, so the projects I undertake have to be interesting.
In 1994, even though I have never wanted to work as a photographer, I studied part-time at the London School of Photography. I specialised in environmental portraiture.
What is ‘environmental portraiture’?
Environmental portraiture involves taking photographs of people in an authentic setting that holds a personal significance to them. These settings could be connected to their family, work, interests or significant moments in their lives.
Published
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of having my photographs featured in various newspapers, magazines, books and websites. It all started with a niche railway magazine that showcased some train pictures I’d taken.
However, I soon realised that landscape photography wasn’t for me, though I still take the off landscape, urban and architecture photograph.
Moving to Sweden
After moving to Sweden I shifted my focus away from getting photographs published. I decided to concentrate on projects for local actors, musicians, models, and my own personal projects.
In 2003, I became a member of the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain, and in 2005, I earned the distinction of being a Licentiate (LRPS). Additionally, in 2006, I obtained the Adobe Certified Professional certificate for Photoshop.
In 2010, I took the leap and self-published the first of three books, which featured a different mode in each book.
Today and tomorrow
I usually have a number of projects ongoing, and I’m always open to collaborating with people if the project is interesting.
I think we’ve reached the peak of the selfie generation where people thought self-taken pictures with a large amount of filters were good enough to represent them.
It seems people are starting to recognise the value of being photographed once again.
